Supporting those who served and the pets who love them
Today, on Veterans Day, we honor the brave men and women who have served our country—and the devoted pets who stand loyally by their side.
Caring for a pet can lift your mood and help reduce stress. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, “Owning a dog can lift your mood or help you feel less stressed. Dogs can help people feel better by providing companionship. All dog owners, including those who have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), can experience these benefits.” While there is not enough research to know if dogs can treat PTSD or its symptoms, pets clearly provide emotional support, help veterans stay active, encourage time outdoors, and create meaningful social connections.
At Colorado Pet Pantry, we see this bond in action every day. For veterans, pets offer comfort, companionship, and a renewed sense of purpose. They also provide loving homes for animals in need, creating a circle of care that benefits both humans and pets alike.
One shining example of this mission is the life and legacy of Ronnie J. Roybal, a Veteran of the United States Army, 1st of the 509th Infantry-Airborne Battalion, stationed in Vicenza, Italy. Ronnie devoted his life to family, community, and animal welfare.
In recognition of his extraordinary commitment, the Colorado Armed Forces Day of Service, celebrated every May, was renamed the Ronnie J. Roybal Armed Forces Day of Service following his passing in November 2023.
In Ronnie’s honor, his family and friends created Team RJR, a volunteer-led group dedicated to supporting those who have served and their pets. Team RJR organizes outreach and events, including the 2025 Vet-Pet Expo, where Colorado Pet Pantry proudly partnered to provide vital pet food, supplies, and resources to service members and their loyal companions.
“We at Team RJR empower those who have served and their pets to thrive, inspiring their journey toward wellness, joy, and a vibrant future.”
Doug Meyers, Founding Member & President, Team RJR
Dogs and other pets can bring out feelings of love, provide loyal companionship, and even offer a sense of structure—qualities that resonate with the discipline many veterans carry from their service. Pets also give veterans a reason to get outdoors, engage with others, and experience the simple joys of everyday life.
“Colorado Pet Pantry is one of the most amazing partners we could hope to gain. The ability to supply pets and their owners with essentials that so many have been without gives meaning to our mission.”
Rob Roybal, Secretary, Team RJR
Through collaborations like this, we see the profound impact of simple acts of generosity—helping those who have served and their pets thrive, one meal and one connection at a time.
This Veterans Day, we honor the courage, compassion, and loyalty that unite our heroes and their companions. Together, we celebrate their service—and the love that makes every day brighter.
