Each year on World Spay Day, we take a moment to recognize one of the simplest ways to protect the health of pets and the well-being of the communities that love them: spaying and neutering.

It’s a routine procedure — but the ripple effects are anything but small.

Why Spay/Neuter Matters

Spay and neuter surgery supports pets and their families in meaningful, measurable ways:

  • Pets live longer — neutered male dogs live 13–18% longer, spayed female dogs 23–26% longer, spayed female cats 39% longer, and neutered male cats 62% longer.
  • Fewer behavior challenges — roaming, marking, yowling, aggression, and mounting can be minimized.
  • Reduced health risks — intact females face higher risk of pyometra and reproductive cancers; neutering males eliminates testicular cancer risk and reduces prostate disease.
  • Lower long-term costs — treating reproductive illnesses can cost 5–10 times more than routine spay/neuter.
  • Fewer unwanted litters — helping reduce shelter crowding and keep pets in the homes that love them.

At Colorado Pet Pantry, we see every day how access to pet food or basic veterinary care can make the difference between a dog or cat staying in a loving home or facing uncertainty.

That’s why partnerships matter.

Working Together for Colorado Pets

Healthy pets help families stay whole. Through collaboration with trusted veterinary partners, Colorado Pet Pantry helps connect pet owners to affordable — and often free — spay/neuter services across the state.

This World Spay Day, we’re proud to spotlight two organizations helping expand that access: SpayToday and D-SNiP.

Partner Spotlight: SpayToday

SpayToday, a Lakewood-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit clinic, provides low-cost and no-cost essential veterinary care both at its clinic and through mobile services across the Denver metro area.

Since 2009, the organization has performed more than 100,000 spay/neuter surgeries for pets whose families might otherwise be unable to afford care.

Colorado Pet Pantry has been proud to partner with SpayToday since 2016, sharing information about their free spay/neuter services with families visiting our pantries throughout the Denver metro region.

Amira Watters, Executive Director of SpayToday, emphasizes that early spay/neuter does more than prevent unplanned litters — it significantly reduces the risk of life-threatening reproductive cancers and serious conditions like pyometra. Just as important, the procedure can ease the stress many intact pets experience from the constant urge to mate, helping them live more comfortably with their families.

Partner Spotlight: D-SNiP

In the Four Corners region, access to veterinary care can be limited — especially in rural and Native American communities. That’s where D-SNiP (Dogster’s Spay & Neuter Program) plays a critical role.

The Durango-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit has performed more than 22,000 surgeries since 1999. Colorado Pet Pantry has partnered with D-SNiP since 2025, helping connect pantry visitors to spay/neuter and preventive care resources in their communities.

Through a dedicated Colorado Pet Pantry grant, D-SNiP provides cost-assistance vouchers to eligible pet owners for spay/neuter, vaccines, and microchipping. Dr. Emily S. Hays, DVM, notes that the program has also helped their team better understand the evolving needs of pet owners across the Four Corners region — insight that continues to shape how care is delivered locally.

The impact is already visible:

  • 75 vouchers issued
  • 51 pets spayed/neutered
  • 28 households supported
  • 47 additional appointments pending

For pet owners like Destry, that support makes a real difference. After receiving information from a local Colorado Pet Pantry representative, Destry scheduled care for four household pets — Coco, Max, Mina, and Sundance — even braving a snowstorm to make the appointments. Two more cats are already scheduled.

“DSNiP has been fortunate to partner with Colorado Pet Pantry and receive a grant that helps assist pet owners of the Southern Colorado Four Corners Region,” Hays said.

Moments like these are exactly why this work matters.

A Healthier Future, Together

Spaying and neutering are more than a single appointment. It’s prevention. It’s stability. It’s one more way to help pets stay healthy and families stay together.

We’re grateful to partners like SpayToday and DSNiP who share this commitment and help expand access to lifesaving care across Colorado. When organizations work together with a shared purpose, the entire community benefits — especially the pets at the heart of it all.

Stay tuned for more partner spotlights in the months ahead.
